WordPress Plugin Highlights are a little something I’m going to start trying here on Code My Own Road. It’s going to be a semi-regular series that points out uses of some really cool plugins for WordPress.
Plugins make up a big chunk of the “what’s important” list for WordPress websites. They allow you to extend WordPress well beyond what the original developers imagined it to be.
Today I want to highlight the Theme Tester plugin by Donncha O Caoimh.
Theme tester is a basic little plugin that hooks into the WordPress theme framework and allows the blog administrator to test a new theme while still showing the current theme to your visitors.
The theme tester plugin inserts a new menu item into your Appearance menu bar which lets the administrator choose to activate theme testing.
Once activated, you simply choose a different theme as you normally do via the themes admin menu and viola, only you (the admin) can see the change. Perfect for developing a new theme without disturbing the old one.
If you’re paranoid (like me), just open another browser such as IE if you’re using Firefox, or vice-versa, and goto your site as a visitor would.
How do you guys develop new themes? Do you use mainly free ones, or are you a thesis junkie like everyone else?

Josh,
This is an *excellent* idea for an ongoing series of articles. You could probably own this space if you put in enough time to evaluate plugins past what everyone seems to do, which is recycle the readme text.
