Thoughts On Using Social Media To Build Your Core Business
“The key point to understand is that you use social media, while it’s popular and applicable to your industry and situation, to build your assets. Social media are communication channels, marketing techniques, just like all the techniques that have come before. Some will last longer than others, and they can represent huge opportunities, but don’t see them as the bricks to build your business upon – they are merely the roads to drive on to get where you want to go, you have to build your vehicle using much stronger stuff.” – Yaro Starak
This comment by Yaro in his article Social Media Mistakes: Are You Forgetting Your Fundamentals? basically sums up exactly how any small business or startup operator should feel toward Social Media.
Social Media lately has become the main focal point of marketing with startups with people trying to build whole business’ around it.
I tend to agree with Yaro that while all forms of social media are generally good (because of the underlying fundamentals behind it), many of the platforms are temporary (trends) that will eventually be replaced and shouldn’t be relied upon as a core part of your business building strategy.
Your business strategy should be able to stand on it’s own. Don’t lay all your eggs in the social media basket. Use social media for what it is: A tool.
