Often it's better to take that approach as you are shifting your customer's mind set from "do I need this?" to "what do I have to do to continue?" which is the same as "which option should I buy?". I will often give away two or three coaching sessions without discussing any contract or sales pitch. By the 4th time, once they realize that I need to focus on other things or they see me working exclusively with another trainee, it's at that point that they approach me and ask if they can hire me to work with them on a monthly retainer. It's the same idea...time is money and I invest quite a bit in their orientation and take it as seriously as if I was paid. Even if they don't hire me, they go out of their way to bring in a friend or relative who would do best with a conditioning coach. This is like my gym clients.
