How To Organically Gain Relevant Twitter Followers With Very Little Effort

This is not a quick, how to gain 99999+ followers overnight processes, but it’s hella effective and one of the only methods I use to grow my twitter base. In my first two months of using Twitter this increased my following from practically 0 followers to over 350 and around 150% each month after that.

I know that isn’t a screamingly good number, but believe me, I have barely lifted a finger and at one point was gaining followers at a rate of 15 per day.

Most twitter evangelists will brag they gained 17,546 new followers in 30 days. That sounds great (sarcasm).. If they were all relevant to your interest group that is. Personally I’d rather 350 focused people than 15,000 people I don’t know who are not interested in a thing I’m talking about.

Here is what I do. Brace yourself. It’s deceptively simple.

  1. Methods for finding new people to add:
    • Use a twitter directory like WeFollow to find the though leaders in your space. They will generally have the most followers, so you don’t need to go too many pages in on the tags you’re interested in.
    • Participate in #followfriday. Search for the hashtag, it’s pretty obvious how it works.
    • Use Nearby Tweets to find local people talking about the topics you are interested in. Add the ones that you would like to hear more from.
  2. Only follow the people that you are interested in. Follow someone if you like what they’re saying and what they have been talking about on twitter. Look at their profile and a few of their past tweets. People use twitter for all sorts of different reasons. Someone could be an SEO expert and that’s what they’re known for online, but they might be talking about dog fashion shows on twitter because that’s what they’re into as a hobby. Why would you follow someone if you’re not interested in what they’re saying?
  3. This has a rather amazing effect, once you’ve begun following these thought leaders, others will start following you as you pop up in their followers list. You can also get extra followers by @replying to these people when you like what they’re saying and have something of value to add. Answering questions is also another great way to open dialog and get more exposure to other people’s lists.
  4. Now it’s time to filter the incoming followers. I filter all my email notifications in Gmail to label the follow notifications so that at the end of the day I dedicate 5 minutes to going through my list of new followers. I open each of these in a new tab and have a quick glance at the BIO, if I’m interested I’ll follow them, if I’m not I’ll leave them following me but I don’t follow back.
  5. If you need more people following you, repeat the process!

That’s my secret to finding relevant people in your niche that actually want to follow you. Not so hard was it? By doing this exact process I’ve been able to grow my twitter following by 150% month on month with barely more than 5 minutes a day.

Interesting article, and I completely agree with you that having 15,000 who are non responsive is kinda useless!
