Effectiveness – Why You Are Better Than Big Business

“Welcome to the real work place kid”. That’s what I’ve been told in the past to explain the unexplainable. The stupid occurrences/glitches that sometimes happen in large corporate environments that waste time and energy and lead to ultimate frustration. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Delays Are Inevitable

I spent 5 hours one day doing important work that just happened to be totally invalidated later because someone else stuffed up and couldn’t get their shit together. It happens all the time.

Re-work is the silent killer of big business, and the biggest cause of delays.

Smaller Teams = Less Links In The Chain

Speaking plainly, you don’t have to rely on as many people to get your job done. Some of the best products have come from small teams with unlimited imagination.

I ain’t so bad being the small player.

Nimble Like Ninjas

One man bands or small teams are way more nimble in today’s business environment – especially in startup projects.

Big course altering changes come about weekly. Or sometimes even overnight.

As smaller teams and companies, we are able to respond carefully, quickly and concisely before larger corporate teams get the approval to change.

Ego Bashing

Big teams are slow because of bad communication and people’s egos.

When a team looses the ability to communicate effectively, it’s easy to see how this effects everyone. In larger teams this is a harder thing for team leaders to correct.

Sometimes it’s hard to claw yourself out a reputation in a large company. I believe this is one of the biggest reasons people butt heads and ego’s get in the way of real work being done.

Smaller Teams Can Mean More Important Work Done

Interestingly, when you only have a set amount of hours to put toward a project, the unimportant never seems to linger for very long.

Prioritizing becomes necessity. It’s funny how if you only have 10 hours a week to dedicate to a project all the important features get done first.

Effectiveness vs. Efficiency

Effectiveness and efficiency are two extremely different beasts and it’s one of the most misconstrued concepts in business today.

Efficiency is being extremely good at something such as a process. A well-oiled machine.

Effectiveness is getting the high impact tasks done. Not to be the best, but to have attained the most consequential progress.

I hope to expand on the topic of Effectiveness vs. Efficiency and which situations are appropriate for each. Sign up to my RSS feed to receive these updates straight to your RSS reader of choice!
