Blogging As A Business – J.D. Roth Shares A Case Study

I’ve been a massive fan of J.D.’s for a while now. He’s a great blogger (the man behind the ever popular Get Rich Slowly) and has a knack for explaining money concepts in a way the majority groups (non-financy types) can understand. That’s why his book has done so bloody well.

I was pretty excited to read this morning that he’s planning a new project and it’s something we can all share in.

As a part of increasing requests for information about how to increase your income instead of being thrifty all the time to save (something he’s covered extensively), he’s pushing for ideas on how to do that – one of which being a showcase of how to build up a blog as an income stream. A.k.a. blogging as a business, something my friend Dave from Website In A Weekend is a big promoter of.

This is exciting for a few reasons:

  1. This is a guy who makes his living blogging as a business. He’s a legitimate source to learn from.
  2. His “dormant” blogs are around the same size as Code My Own Road right now. We’re both embarking to improve this around the same time. Obviously I don’t think I’ll be able to keep pace with him, but it’d be nice to learn what he’s doing in what order.
  3. Unlike his other GRS Projects in the past where he’s kept a garden etc, this will be about making money. Something I’m sure my readers are much more interested in, and hence why I’m sharing.

So, I thought I’d share this news with you. It’s not often an A-List blogger such as J.D. Roth gets up and essentially says my skills are legit, and I’m going to show you how.

Keep watching this development, I guarantee there will be some important lessons here especially if you’re a blogger.

  1. Josh, I’m starting to get a much clearer picture of how to make this stuff actually happen.

I can’t prove anything yet, but I can now see how to build out a “fishing” model to test the viability of a market. You gotta have a line, bait, and a hook.

  2. A model for discovering receptiveness to sales viability of a blogging niche would be awesome. I’d pay for that!

Blogging is notoriously the hardest business area to make any kind of predictions.
